Spray Tanning Dos and Don’ts

As the cooler weather approaches our tans begin to fade and the need for a healthy golden glow through alternative means such as spray tanning increases. Spray tanning, which uses a natural and organic sunless tanning solution, is a great way to achieve a beautiful sun kissed color in a matter of minutes. This safe and convenient way of attaining a tan is fairly easy, yet there are a few dos and don’ts that help ensure you receive optimal results.

Following these dos and don’ts of spray tanning will help you achieve the golden bronze glow that you have always dreamed of.

• Lightly exfoliate your skin

Gently exfoliate your skin on the day that you will be receiving the spray tan. Exfoliate using a water-based scrub because any oil on the skin will leave a barrier and inhibit the spray tanning solution from developing. The California Sun Exfoliator is one of the best exfoliators on the market because it successfully removes dead skin and old spray tan remnants to prep your skin.

• Wear your hair up and remove jewelry

Wear your hair up, away from your face and neck, to avoid it getting in the way of your spray tan. You can place a spray tanning hairnet over your hair to protect it from the solution. You must also remove jewelry before being sprayed to keep it from creating odd lines. Avoid a necklace or bracelet tan line by leaving your jewelry at one or placing it in a secure spot while being sprayed.

• Dress appropriately

Dark clothing is best because the solution will not leave any traces of color on it. You should also opt for loose fitting clothing and shoes to avoid the removal of solution onto your clothes. If it is raining wear full protective clothing that covers the entire body. This will ensure the sunless tanning solution on your body does not come in contact with the rain. Remove your clothing before being sprayed or opt for spray tanning disposables.

• Avoid sweating and showering for 6 hours

Avoid any strenuous exercise or perspiration activity immediately after the spray tanning session, as this will affect the developing process. Do not shower immediately after your spray tan. The exact time you need to wait to shower varies based on the type of spray tanning solution, but it is usually in the four to six hour range.

• Cover leather in your car & furniture

Cover leather seats and furniture before sitting on it to keep it from absorbing the spray tanning solution. Covering your leather car seats when it is hot will also help prevent sweating.

• Apply a light tan extender

After the time frame has passed and you have showered, apply a light tan extender. Choose a tan extender that has light DHA bronzing in it to extend the look of your spray tan. A high quality sunless tan extender will reduce the uneven wear and patchiness sometimes caused from shaving or chlorine exposure.

• Exfoliate too hard

Although it is recommended to exfoliate the day of your spray tan, be careful not to exfoliate too hard. Salt or sugar scrubs paired with mitts or luffas may be too harsh and will have a negative impact on your sunless tan.

• Apply moisturizers, deodorants, etc.

For optimal results, do not apply moisturizers, deodorants, cologne, body oils, or makeup before your tanning appointment as they can affect the result of your tan. They will interact with the solution and will inhibit the airbrush tanning solution from producing an even tan.

• Get waxed or get a mani or pedi after spray tanning

Do not get waxed after getting a spray tan because it will remove some of the solution and will create an uneven or splotchy area. A manicure and pedicure are also not recommended after spray tanning because the water, scrub and lotion will all interfere with the solution.

• Don’t shower or wash your face immediately after

The moment water touches the sprayed skin the tanning process stops in the area affected by the water. Avoid any contact with water for at least 4-6 hours after spray tanning. The longer you wait the more time your tan has to develop.

• Apply lotion or deodorant until you have showered

Applying lotion or deodorant before you have showered will interfere with the solution. For best results avoid lotion, deodorant, perfume, etc. until after you have showered. To extend the life of your tan choose a lotion that has both a moisturizer and bronzing component. High quality lotions, such as the Amber Sun Extending Moisturizer, also contain a anti-aging component that has 500 times the protective benefits of vitamin C.

• Swim in a chlorinated swimming pool

If you want your spray tan to last, you should avoid swimming in a chlorinated pool. The chlorine will strip your sunless tan completely. If you must go swimming, make sure it is at least 24 hours after you spray tan. You can try to combat the effects of the chlorine by applying a tan extender.
